The biosynthesis of cholesterol may be divided into five steps:

1. Synthesis of HMG-CoA (3 hydroxy 3-methyl glutaryl CoA)
2. Biosynthesis of mevalonate
3. Formation of isoprenoid units
4. Synthesis of squalene
5. Conversion of squalene to cholesterol
