- It is a reversible inhibition.
- In this type of inhibition, there is structurally similarity between the inhibitor and the substrate, and hence there is competition between I and S for the active site of the enzyme.
- In this type, both ES and EI complexes are formed during the reaction.

However, the actual amount of ES and EI will depend on the following:.
- Affinity between enzymes and substrate inhibitor.
- Actual concentration of substrate and inhibitor present.
Thus, if I is present in sufficiently high concentration, it can replace the substrate entirely and thus block the reaction or lower the rate of the reaction.
Thus, Km is high, but Vmax is the same in competitive inhibitor.
However, when the concentration of [S] is increased, the effect of I can be reversed, forcing it out from EI complex; thus, [I] and [S] are mutually exclusive.
