Maharashtra is known for dissimilar climatic conditions and dynamic topography. Its rich flora and fauna perfectly reflect the diversity of climate and geography as the topography of the region varies from arid desert and tropical rain forest to mountain ranges over 4,000 feet in altitude. However with changing circumstances, the diverse ecosystem of Maharashtra’s Western Ghats faces a threat from growing population and unabated development measures. Resultant dense forest degradation is perpetually affecting forests leading to a large increase in open forests. Today, recorded forests cover approximately one-fifth of Maharashtra’s geographical area which is 61,939 square kilometers of which 79.47% constitute reserved forests and 13.23% protected forests. Unclassified forests comprise 7.3% of the total forest area.
