The main geographic features of Rajasthan are the Thar desert and the Aravalli range which runs through the state from southwest to northeast. Despite little forest cover, the state has rich and varied flora and fauna. Forests mostly confined to the east of the Aravalli range constitute just about 9% of the total area of the state. Natural vegetation in Rajasthan is mostly ephemeral occurring only during the monsoon season. The shallow wetlands of eastern Rajasthan are dotted with shrubs, creepers, bushes and herbs. The Ranthambore National Park has 75 tree species, 30 species of grasses, 13 types of shrubs and over 100 medicinal plants
