The common sage or culinary sage is a short-lived semi-woody shrub. A small evergreen plant with woody stems, grayish leaves and blue to purplish flowers it is native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean region.
Leaves are used extensively in the kitchen to add a unique flavour to salads, egg dishes, soups, stews, meats and vegetables.
Sage is used as an ingredient in soaps, cosmetics and perfumes. Smeared on the skin, sage is a useful insect repellent. Modern research has confirmed antiseptic, estrogenic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties in extracts from sage. As a cosmetic ingredient it is classed as antidandruff, antimicrobial, antioxidant, astringent, cleansing, deodorant, skin conditioning, skin protecting, soothing agent and tonic.
In cosmetics and personal care products, the ingredients derived from the whole plant, leaves, flowers, stems and roots are used in the formulation of a variety of products including bath products, shaving creams, fragrance products, shampoos, and cleansing products.
