Pastes are semisolid preparations intended for external application on the skin. They are generally very thick and stiff. They do not melt at ordinary temperature and thus form a protective coating over the area where they are applied. Pastes are used as antiseptic, protective, or soothing dressings, which are often spread on lint before being applied. The types of bases that are used for the preparation of pastes are hydrocarbon bases, water-miscible bases, and water-soluble bases. Pastes are prepared by trituration or fusion method. The trituration method is used when the base is liquid or semisolid and the fusion method is used when the base is semisolid or solid in nature. Paste should be stored in a well-closed container and in a cool place so as to prevent evaporation of the moisture present in the paste.
