Learning Objective

  • Formulations that are available in suspension form
  1. Oral suspensions: Examples of oral suspensions include
    • antacid suspensions—magnesium hydroxide mixture, such as Gelusil and Digene (both contain a combination of magnesium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide)
    • pediatric paracetemol oral suspension
    • chloramphenicol (antibiotic suspension)
    •  amoxicillin and potassium clavulanate suspension (reconstituted)
    • magnesium hydroxide mixture—laxative.
  2. Suspensions for topical administration: An example of this type of suspension is calamine lotion.
  3. Suspensions for parenteral use and inhalation therapy: Examples include
    • cholera vaccine—dispersions of killed microorganisms
    •  adsorbed diphtheria and tetanus vaccine—constituent toxoids are adsorbed to a substrate of aluminum hydroxide or phosphate. Thus, a prolonged antigenic stimulus is provided, resulting in a high antibody titer.
