Andhra Pradesh’s (AP) varied topography from hilly ranges to the shores of Bay of Bengal support varied vegetation types enriched by a variety of flora and fauna. The variations are accentuated by the various types of ecosystems such as hilly, wetland, manmade systems, mangroves, estuaries and forests that are largely dry deciduous to scrub. Out of a total number of 2,586 species, around 1,800 species are estimated to be medicinal plants. The AP government in an effort to conserve the gene pool of medicinal plants occurring in the forests has taken up ex situ cultivation to effectively harness the state’s medicinal plant wealth. Ethnobotanical gardens of about 400 species are established in the four regional research centres in the state located at Rajamundry, Tirupati, Mulugu (near Hyderabad) and Achuthapuram in Khammam District.
