Definition
Capsules are solid unit dosage form of medicament in which the drug is enclosed in a hard or soft container or shell made of suitable form of gelatin.
Advantages
- They are attractive in appearance.
- Drugs with unpleasant odor and taste can be enclosed in the shell.
- The dose and combination of drug can be altered.
- They are economical.
- Ease of administration and portability.
- Less formulation additives and processing steps when compared to tablets.
- Disintegration time is lesser when compared to ordinary tablets.
Disadvantages
- Drugs that are hygroscopic, deliquescent, effervescent or efflorescent are not suitable for filling into capsules.
- Irritant GIT drugs cannot be formulated in capsule form.
- They are not tamper proof resistant.
