Chattisgarh

Situated in the Deccan biogeographical area, Chattisgarh has forests under two major types, tropical moist deciduous forest and tropical dry deciduous forest. The 22 varied forest sub-types existing in the state contributing to its rich biocultural diversity and dependence of the large forest-dwelling population on medicinal plants are the reasons for the government declaring it the ‘Herbal State’ in 2001. Thus Chattisgarh forest policy is specially provided to facilitate conservation of the medicinal plants which are in the category ‘Nationalized Non-Wood Forest Produce’.
