INTRODUCTION
Glycolysis was derived from the Greek words glykys, which means sweet, and lysis, which means splitting. In the process of glycolysis a molecule is catabolised in a series of reactions to yield two molecules of three-carbon compound called pyruvate. In the glycolysis pathway, a series of reaction takes place during which some of the energy is released from glucose and conserved in the form of ATP and NADH. Glycolysis is the pathway that was first to be elucidated and is probably the best understood (See Figure 8.6).
