The growth of the cosmetic industry in the west was the result of meticulous study of the age-old cosmetic preparations by cosmetic chemists. There is elaborate literature on the scores of chemical ingredients used and their physicochemical properties, and cosmetics were classified according to their effect or purpose or alternatively according to their physical/chemical composition. Research was essentially directed at developing products with better presentation, stability, uniformity in composition and virtual assurance of relatively innocuous character of the finished product. From the simple vanishing cream of the late 19th century to the sea of foundation creams available in the market today, the cosmetic industry has come a long way to the current multi-billion dollar industry that it is.
On the other hand, India’s ancient and rich herbal tradition represents a treasure house of knowledge on cosmetic utility of plants. Ayurvedic medical treatises such as Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, among many others, contain elaborate references on groups of herbs used for a glowing complexion, herbs used in several skin diseases etc. Aside from such references in our literature on the elaborate usage of herbs for self-adornment, the healing and cosmetic properties of thousands of herbs including those on the kitchen shelves is common knowledge in Indian households. Turmeric, sandal paste, castor oil, honey, neem, saffron and henna that are a part of everyday routine in traditional living are today well-known cosmetics. From rainwater to seaweed, the amazing healing quality of nature has been realized. Rainwater according to herbal therapists is the best skin toner, honey is the best moisturizer and seaweed has a revitalizing effect on the skin.
With this global awakening of interest in the gentle, yet powerful healing virtues of herbs, herbal ingredients are increasingly being incorporated into cosmetic bases. Most herbs used in herbal cosmetics are included based on traditional usage, i.e., experience rather than by experimental investigation. But then worldwide usage of herbs in cosmetics and scientific evaluation of cosmetic potential of thousands of herbs is now unravelling their better physiological effectiveness. Several herbals are now used in medicinal care aside from their use in cosmetics.
