- National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) is the principal instrument of CBD at the national level. The goals and objectives of CBD are implemented through national laws, which integrate conservation initiatives of various bodies involving farmers, indigenous local communities, land owners, academia such as universities, botanical institutes, etc.
- A signatory to CBD, NBSAP is formulated by the Ministry of Environment and Forests and it has envisaged a comprehensive action plan for conserving biodiversity in India.
- It has recommended strong measures calling for huge reorientation of the process of economic development and governance of natural resources, such that the health of the environment and interests of biomass-dependent communities are protected.
- These recommendations are already being implemented in nine states, with the support of NGOs such as Kalpavriksh Environmental Action Group. The administration of this NGO is coordinated by the Biotech Consortium of India Ltd through 33 state level, 18 local level and 10 interstate level plans.
- The initiatives being implemented include the following:
- Building up scientific expertise and skilled human resource personnel in the areas of Biosystematics, Conservation Biology and medicinal plant resources.
- Newer agrotechnology development for medicinal plant cultivation at village level thereby generating employment.
