One of the most land-hungry states in India with lowest per capita land holding, much of Kerala’s notable biodiversity is concentrated and protected in the Western Ghats. Almost a fourth of India’s 10,000 plant species are found in the state. Amongst the almost 4,000 flowering plant species – 1,272 of which are endemic to Kerala and 159 threatened – 900 species are medicinal plants. Its 9,400 square kilometers of forests include tropical wet evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, tropical moist and dry deciduous forests and montane subtropical and temperate forests. Altogether 24% of Kerala is forested. Two of the world’s Ramsar Convention listed wetlands – Lake Sasthamkotta and the Vembanad-Kol wetlands – as well as the 1,455.4 square kilometer vast Nilgiri Biosphere are in Kerala. The state of Kerala is well known for its rich tradition of Ayurvedic medicine. Apart from the world renowned Kottakkal, it has 20 governmental and 6 non-governmental research organizations engaged in medicinal plant research and production. Overall the State Medicinal Plant Board at Thrissur supervises the medicinal plant cultivation activities in the state.
