The National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) is a premier plant-based multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art national R&D centre of CSIR undertaking research from classical taxonomy to cutting edge areas of modern biology, including both, applied and basic research in multifarious fields ranging from biochemistry to bioinformatics, for the conservation and sustainable utilization of the non-crop plant genetic resources of the country.

To keep pace with the upsurge in the demand for plant-derived products, to accelerate R&D output, NBRI has instituted the Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF) with high-tech sophisticated instruments to cater to the analytical needs of its research projects.

This NABL-accredited lab is equipped with complete instrumentation required to carry out the entire spectrum of testing of plant-based products. It has been recognized by AYUSH as a centre for standardization and quality control of herbal drugs and is also involved in the preparation of monographs for Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India.

Other CSIR laboratories engaged in research on plant drugs are

  1. Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI, Lucknow)
  2. Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB, Kolkata)
  3. Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT, Hyderabad)
  4. Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB, Hyderabad)
  5. Institute of Himalayan Bio resource Technology (IIHBT, Palampur)
  6. Central Salt & Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI, Bhavnagar)
