Orissa

The state of Orissa located in the eastern coast of Indian peninsula is quite rich in natural resources and is one of the richest biodiverse regions in southeast Asia. It has varied and widespread forests harbouring dry deciduous forests as well as mangroves with several unique, endemic, rare and endangered floral and faunal species. There are seven major river deltas formed by the rivers Subernekha, Budha balanga, Baitarani, Brahmani, Mahanadi, Rushikulya and Bahuda. This region has five morphological zones namely the coastal plains, the middle mountainous and highland regions, the central plateaus, the western rolling uplands and major flood plains. The dominant vegetation type being mangrove, there are 94 species of orchids and 1,076 species of other plants including 2 species of orchids which are endemic, 8 endangered, 8 vulnerable and 34 rare species of plants.
