There is a large market for valerian for use in pharmaceuticals, food and cosmetic industries. Majority of valerian in trade comes from cultivated material. Most of the drug is now produced in Europe which is also its largest market. Germany is the largest consuming country. Majority of the standardized extracts and crude, cut and sifted material on the domestic market are prepared from European supplies. A variety of valerian root preparations ranging from dried roots, extracts, tinctures, essential oil, etc., are traded. China, France and Hungary are the largest valerian volatile oil producing countries. Recently there is an increase in demand for valerian in Korea. The plant is also being added to flavour tobacco and soft drinks and fruit juices containing valerian are now sold on the market. Japan and the United States are the chief producers of such beverages. While valerian production is increasing, its prices are decreasing. In 2001 there was a surplus of 4,200 tonnes of valerian roots in European countries. Major producing countries of valerian include Belgium, France, former USSR and China. India is the major producer of Indian valerian.
